Director, the TELS Center

Marcia Linn specializes in education in mathematics, science, and technology. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, she investigates science teaching and learning, gender equity, and design of learning environments.

Linn’s Knowledge Integration perspective on science learning guides all aspects of TELS research. She and her colleagues developed the Knowledge Integration framework for research in science education and curriculum design based on their studies of the conceptions of scientific phenomena that students bring to science class, and on longitudinal studies of the impact of instruction. The Knowledge Integration framework recognizes that students grapple with a variety of conflicting, often confusing, ideas about scientific phenomena, and examines how to capitalize on these varied ideas to help students develop a more coherent understanding of science and introduce them to scientific inquiry and analysis. Prospective students interested in learning, instruction, or diversity in science and technology should contact Marcia Linn.

Building on a background in physics and cognitive psychology, Jim Slotta designs and investigates Web-based learning environments. He studies how these environments can add inquiry activities to the K-12 curriculum and improve student learning.

Slotta guides partnerships with curriculum developers, technology designers, educational researchers, and school districts. He works with the Concord Consortium to design and implement open source learning environments. Prospective students interested in open source learning environments, school partnerships, and science learning should contact Jim Slotta.
