When I create a new project, it would be enormously helpful (and time saving) if I could specify the intended age range for the project (two-year intervals), and then run a tool that AUTOMATICALLY analyzes the vocabulary level of my content. My text would be compared to a comprehensive database of vocabulary terms, tagged by age level. This database would need probably 100,000 words to be comprehensive.
The system would highlight all vocabulary terms that are ABOVE the target age range, or not found in the vocabulary database. The author could then decide whether to remove these terms, rewrite them in simpler language, or turn them into "Pop Up Definition" hyperlinks (the preferred solution).
Note: this tool could also simultaneously serve as a spell-check tool, ensuring that no simple spelling errors slip into the project.
